For the longest time I believed I’d
never write
short stories. I was always more interested in novels. But that all
changed in 1999, when I attended a full time writing course taught by
renowned short story writer Owen Marshall. Ever since then,
I’ve
held a fascination for the shorter form.
I've also had a bit of success:
Showman
won the Western Districts Short Story competition in 1999
A
walk around the back yard gained third prize
in the Western Districts Short Story competition in 2001
Threads
gained third prize in the Auswrite Short Story Competition in 2006
Damien's
Art won the Rawene short story competition in 2006
I've only included the national and international competitions above,
but I've also won or placed in numerous smaller competitions (I can't
remember them all off hand), and had stories published in magazines and
newspapers and a few broadcast on radio. And just to round it out, I've
regularly been a writing competition judge, and I once won a nationwide
bad writing competition as well.
As for the two stories I've included,
“Apple” is the first fantasy
short story I
ever wrote, and I just like “A Boat in a Glass
Case”. Whereas both
Tallander’s Apprentice and Apple are for younger readers, A
Boat
in a Glass Case was written for adults.
Both stories have been published, Apple in Write
Now magazine, and A Boat in a Glass Case in Takahe magazine.
